Christmas Party PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mun Ghaleb

Ho Ho Ho Everybody!

It may or may not be a surprise to you, but winter is my favorite time of year. Despite all of the doom and gloom from the double whammy that is English weather and the recession, there is still a gleaming ray of hope that some of us like to call Christmas.

Christmas - that heartening gap between the pressures of semester one and the onset of exams - is definitely worth celebrating. And what better way to do it than with a slap up meal and drinks with your fellow computer scientists? The warm, cuddly, friendly Computer Science society has teamed up with the formidable DCS task force to lay on a Christmas Party for all CS students to attend.

So what makes the KCLCS Party so Special? I'm glad you asked. It's not just the food fit for royalty we're providing, it's not just the drinks, it’s not even the fantastic River Room setting, the crackers, or even the prizes we're giving away - it’s an opportunity to mingle with your fellow students, tutors and teachers. You may think I'm crazy for even suggesting that - but trust me, they are a good bunch of characters, and getting to know your teachers and tutors is something that can prove to be very useful, especially once you get to second and third year and need help and advice from them on a one to one basis.

We'll also follow up on the year old tradition of awarding a prize for the best first and second year lecturer, and a Staff vs. Student quiz so come along and get involved.

So, to the important part:

Time
Dinner will be available from 5pm till late Thursday 17th December. We hope that most people will come at around 6 ready for the awards etc. at 7.
Location
We’ve managed to book out the River Room which is one of the nicest function rooms in the King’s Building. It’s next to Chapters.
Price
£10. All inclusive. Food. Drinks. Prizes. Raffle. Mingling. Cracker.
Menu (inc. Halal and Vegetarian) :
• Smoked salmon blini
• Turkey sate with chilli & cranberry dip
• Filo basket with duck and champagne terrine
• Mushroom, sage and onion brushetta
• Butternut squash and stilton tart
• King Prawn Skewers
• Mediterranean Bruschetta
• Mini mince pie and whipped brandy cream
• Soft Drinks and Alcohol included

Prizes
Come and find out!

What are you waiting for? We only have 50 tickets available so don't miss out - contact your year representatives

Mun - 07908627217 (3rd Year)
Leo - 07711666651 (2nd Year)
Kripika - 07901002629 (1st Year)

Remember that its the people who make the party - so make the effort and bring your game faces. Depending on the success of this event we will be hosting more parties and events for your entertainment, so lets start the year off with a bang!!

Enjoy yourselves,

KCLCS

Some Career Tips for Joining The Start-up Economy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mun Ghaleb

Earlier this week, we learned from the Federal Reserve that the U.S. economy appears to be stabilizing. That's the very good news. The not-so-good news is that many analysts expect the recovery to be a "jobless" one, at least for the next two years, and likely longer. Thus, while the economy may start coming back later this year and early next, we shouldn't expect real job growth for some time.

This is not good news for folks looking for jobs or thinking about career changes -- particularly for those in the media and ad industry, since our sector generally lags behind the overall economy by the better part of a year. However, as media and marketing companies continue to be disrupted by the Internet and digital technologies, we will certainly see a lot of "green-shoot" growth at small companies, particularly start-ups.

I generally spend between 10% to 20% of my time talking to folks about their careers -- either giving advice about potential job moves, talking up opportunities in new media and start-ups generally, or specifically recruiting folks to Simulmedia. I like doing this. I think it's important to do. Given how key start-ups are to the future of our industry, I thought it might be helpful to share some of the career tips that I give those who are considering joining start-up companies. Here they are:

5 Methods I Used To Get A Job Through Twitter PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mun Ghaleb

By Jade Craven – Follow her @jadecraven.

2 days ago, I met my friend Sam Mutimer (@sammutimer) for lunch. We talked about blogging, conferences and social media over lunch. I left with the opportunity to work with her team at Thinktank Media (@thinktankmedia) when they roll out strategies for new clients.

I was quite surprised – especially as I use twitter to hang out and connecting with awesome people when I have the time.

How I Got The Job

I don’t remember how I met Sam, but she soon encouraged me to go the the tweetup she founded called Tweetupmellers(@tweetupmellers) . She was great at getting me to talk to new people and was really encouraging.

I kept in touch with Sam, helping her out and just talking about her projects. I also focused on connecting with more people from the tweetupmellers community. Fast forward to two meetups later, and she was talking about a new project and how she might be needing additional help for it. In the past month, she has hired 3 of the twums attendees and has discovered many others through twitter.
My job is only 8 hours a month – but I will have the opportunity to earn an income while setting up my blog. I’ll be able to accept more work when she gets new clients and I’ll get some training in the business side of the industry.
